We cover the story of Bassingbourn Airfield during the war
years from 1939 to 1945. The RAF in the early years used Bassingbourn
as a Operational Training Unit (OTU) flying Blenheim bombers
(No.108 Squadron) and then Wellington bombers (No.215 Squadron,
11OTU ) tookover in April 1940. These aircraft took part in
the 1000 bomber night raid on Cologne, Germany.
From August 1942, the American 8th Airforce, 91st Bomb Group
(H) tookover the airbase flying B17 Flying Fortress’s
including the famous 'Memphis Belle' of which flew all of
her 25 missions from this airfield.
